MIDGES
The Scottish
midge has a fearsome reputation and can be a major problem in certain
locations during the summer months, given the right weather conditions.
Just
when you want to keep that bedroom or kitchen window open to let some
air in you can't, for fear of swarms of invading midges.
Hotels
and many local residents are starting to realise the benefits of screening
a range of rooms for their own and their guests' comfort during the summer
months.
There are many
species of midge. They come in all different sizes and the smallest can
be very dificult to keep out. We have found solutions for keeping out
the vast majority of midges and making life more comfortable all round.
See the chart below and identify which mesh option would be best for your
own midge protection requirements.
AIRFLOW: The
price of keeping out midges in particular is the reduction in airflow.
You will need to think about doubling the amount of window used for ventilation
to equal the amount of unscreened window normally used. |

MESH OPTIONS
There are various
choices of mesh depending on your requirements. All keep out insects,
flies, cats, birds, mice, rats, spiders etc
All our meshes will keep out all flying insects to the satisfaction of
the Environmental Health Officer (The Food Safety [General Hygiene]
Regulations 1995) .
| STANDARD |
Made
of PVC coated glass fibre this mesh is durable and will withstand
knocks and bangs but can be cut with a knife or other sharp implement
and can therefore be subject to vandalism. |
| ALUMINIUM |
Made
of aluminium this mesh is a little stronger than standard mesh. It
is of similar durability to standard mesh but can be subject to corrosion,
shortening its life span. Like standard mesh it can be cut with a
sharp object. It is more expensive than standard mesh. |
| STAINLESS
STEEL |
Stainless
steel mesh is very difficult to cut with a knife and will not rot
or corrode. With careful use it can last a lifetime. Not much more
expensive than aluminium mesh but far superior. |
MIDGE MESHES
|
FINE:
This mesh is adequate in the majority of cases.
SUPERFINE: For those areas where the smaller species live and where
fine mesh is just not good enough.
GOSSAMER: If all else fails, gossamer is sure to work! |
